Velodrome, Olympic Park

The 6000 seat Velodrome venue will house track cycling events during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic games.

Our works package included pile caps and ground beams, parabolic curved formwork to create the competitors’ access and egress into the venue, lower and upper concourse slabs, together with external works, gabion and RC retaining walls.

A key challenge of this scheme was to deliver the signature architects’ “Hopkins”, aspiration to achieve patterned fair face soffits and walls. This meant undertaking a series of mock-ups in order that concrete mixes and formwork were agreed before construction on site began. We worked alongside main contractor ISG and their Design Manager to ensure the vision was achieved.

Recycled materials were used as much as possible including crushed glass, GGBS, PFA, crushed aggregate and stent. We achieved an overall 31% usage of recycled materials.
